Hot-water extraction — what people call steam cleaning — sprays hot water and detergent deep into the pile, then pulls back as much as it can. What it can’t reach sits in the backing and the pad underneath. Dry foam whips the detergent into a lather first, so the cleaning happens in the foam instead of in a gallon of water.
